DEFRA-Listed Software for Mandatory Digital Waste Tracking

The UK government is making digital waste tracking mandatory. SkipLogic Ltd (product: SkipLogic) is named on the government’s compatible software provider list for the Report Receipt of Waste service. Check the scope of the service and supported reporting scenarios before choosing software for your site.

Digital waste tracking is now mandatory for permitted and licensed receiving sites in England and Wales

The receiving-site requirement began on 1 October 2026. Different rules and implementation dates apply to other waste-sector roles.

Who must report waste receipts?

The first phase of the UK Digital Waste Tracking service applies to permitted or licensed sites receiving controlled waste in England and Wales. These receiving-site operators have been required to report waste receipts digitally since 1 October 2026. The service records information about waste received at those sites; it is not a blanket requirement for every skip collection, exchange or disposal to be submitted in the same way. DEFRA has outlined a later phase for waste collectors, brokers and dealers, with mandatory use planned from October 2027. Read the official government guidance to understand which requirements apply to your business and each site.

SkipLogic is listed by DEFRA as a software option

SkipLogic Ltd (product: SkipLogic) appears on the government’s published list of compatible software providers for the Report Receipt of Waste service. The listing identifies SkipLogic as exempt from certain Production Approval Test (PAT) scenarios. This is an important scope limitation: a listing does not mean every PAT scenario or every type of waste movement is supported. Before relying on the software for a particular site or workflow, confirm that the required scenarios are supported by your SkipLogic plan and setup. The government explains that providers self-certify their compatibility; the listing is not a DEFRA endorsement or guarantee.

Digital waste tracking with SkipLogic

Record every waste movement

Use SkipLogic to maintain operational waste records. The information needed for a Report Receipt of Waste submission depends on the receiving site, waste type and reporting scenario.

Generate compliant digital WTNs

Create digital Waste Transfer Notes with on-site signatures and a searchable record. A WTN is a separate document from a Report Receipt of Waste submission, so keep the purpose of each record clear.

Submit to DEFRA in a few clicks

Keep track of reporting responsibilities

Use your waste records and reporting workflow to help your team manage the information needed for digital waste tracking. Your legal reporting duties and deadlines depend on the type of business and site you operate.

Understand the scope before you rely on software

  • Check that the receiving site and waste types you handle fall within the software’s supported scope
  • Confirm which DEFRA Production Approval Test scenarios are supported for your workflow
  • Keep accurate source records for the waste movements your business handles
  • Use digital WTNs and audit records where they apply to your operation
  • Check submission status and resolve validation issues within the required timeframe
  • Your business remains responsible for meeting its legal reporting duties

Check your site’s reporting obligations

The receiving-site reporting requirement is already in force in England and Wales. If your business operates a permitted or licensed receiving site, check that your software supports the waste types, sites and reporting scenarios you need. Do not assume that a provider listing alone guarantees suitability for every operation.

Important: SkipLogic is listed by the government as a compatible software provider for the Report Receipt of Waste service, with an exemption for certain PAT scenarios. Providers self-certify their compatibility; the listing is not a DEFRA endorsement or guarantee. Confirm the software’s supported scenarios for your specific operation. Operators remain responsible for meeting all applicable legal requirements.
